Yes and I am really fussy but he was as lyric tenors go better then most any of them --so tragic, he had it all and look at what we have today by comparison, at least at the moment.

Great sound and ring in his voice without sounding manufactured and hooty. Lovely. As many have said, such a shame he died so young.

I am in total agreement with your comment pearlmuth3.Inasmuch as he was only 35 or 36 when he died, given his fine technique,he would have only gotten better in his forties.I've heard a few of his recordings in Italian and they are very good. With his seamless legato, great technique and gorgeous timbre,I rank him among the all time great lyric tenors.Bravissimo Fritz!

Not only a fantastic lyric tenor but imagine how he would have been had he lived into his 40's, just imagine how he would have developed into his prime with that great technique he had, fine German training, yes he would have been the greatest lyric in the 70's in the world and always one of the very best ever. He was already recording in Italian, songs and they are fantastic for a non Italian tenor. He is in the Bjorling class of lyric tenors with out a doubt.

Love Wunderlich. And it's nice nice to find someone who doesn't begin and end the word 'tenor' with pavarotti. I like him alot but he's not the best :)

The greatest of all tenors. The pure beauty of his voice is still unsurpassed. Why couldn't he just have put the book back in the morning? A great tragedy.

Sorry I never got to hear him, most beautiful lyric of his time, heard Bjorling, Tucker, Corelli, Di Stefano, Pav, Schicoff, Kraus, Gedda and many more since 1957 but wish I could have heard Fritz as his basic sound for me was more beautiful then Pavoratti with better low notes and emotion, tragic ending like with Schmidt, died to soon. |
