This clip shows how the pharmaceutical companies used these statistics to market the SSRI's to the general public. People would in response go and see a psychiatrist and demand to be made normal. It also shows how Dr. Robert Spitzer, the creator of this new diagnostic method admits that the list, by asking only for surface symptoms, to some extent medicalizes completely normal thoughts..

Bless the pharmaceutical companies for coming out with the SSRIs that have helped numerous people diagnosed with anxiety disorders (such as those with depression or OCD), but damn them for pathologizing normal human responses! In my opinion, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the way to go, SSRIs combined only for legitimate cases. Hopefully with CBT, in time the patient could gradually break away from the drug and be able to face life with more resilience! ;)

The Trap: I want to be less(er) of a human, because the drug takes the pain away? An Anti- Nietzschean drug?

Definitely - there is a big difference between someone who has to be on drugs to prevent psychotic breaks and someone who has legitimate reasons to be bummed out but is given drugs instead of help getting out of their mess.

Holly that was the point I am trying to make. There are many people who DO in fact need medication to operate in daily life. But there are SO many people who DO NOT NEED it. They mistake normal day to day obstacles and sadness which is normal witgh serious medical conditions.

Okay. I totally lost track of the conversation.. But I think everybody has very viable points here. But like they say experience is the best teacher. And thanks to the Enet. People can express those experience from all over

GREAT video! I was a moderator on a depression peer support forum for 4 years. Most of our "sick" members were actually just poor, in abusive relationships, working low-wage and unstable jobs, but had been told that the real answer to their problems was a pill...because that is what their public benefits provided, not relief from their stressors. Anyone would be "Crazy" living like they did.

if she is on an SSRI like is described in this video she is most likely not addicted. They are not addictive, it is actually quite hard to get people to stay on them as they can have negative side effects
