Note the different shades of gray in the image. Unlike grayscale, B&W is just black and white.

Thanx mate!For the second picture: I tend to think that the other guy seperated the water from the pier as well, your water is too contrasted, he doesnt have so many pure blacks. Thus i guess he didnt use a dodge effect. But I just learned how to apply a dodge effect on a new layer! and the shift+click with a brush! And the ctrl+M to move the selection! I used it only for shapes) hahaha Ps is so amazing.
