"Let us beware of saying death is the opposite of life. The living being is only a species of the dead, and a very rare species." --Nietzsche.

One of the most intelligent and brave people. To understand what she is saying one must be completely honest to himself. You can read all her works but it doesnt mean you understand any of it. And if you cant tell the difference between reason and emotion, and look for the answer in her works, its rather sad.

So what do you think of Rand's take on selfishness? Well, you know, her being a psycho-narcissist an' all.
vinnynumbnuts (July 23, 2008 at 9:26 pm)
You began with how "Rand's philosophy is itself an expression of deep-seated and pathological narcissism," and now, dark doctor, you have altered this claim to "...but that's not the sole reason her philosophy is invalid. But it is undoubtedly a part of it." Messy. Abit paranoic, narcissistic and irrational on your part, no? Or I am a silly man? Ho ho! But you must see the connection between wars and irrationality whereby people are considered fodder for the collective by the arbitrary few, no?

Yes, how silly of me to have entertained the thought of associating you with irrationality with regard to you statement about the lack of 'evidence' for the benefits of rationality & disbenefits of irrationality. Rand proposed that unlike the mind of, say, a crow, man's survival depends primarily on his reason. Irrationality (good ol' being unreasonable) runs counter to this. Irrationality can be small, short range, even beneficial, but it can be dangerous contextually and in the long run.

I'm not advocating irrationality, silly.Rand claimed repeatedly that anything other than her philosophy was irrational. And that the irrational was necessarily deadly. This just doesn't hold up to any kind of scrutiny at all. All sorts of people are running around with "irrational beliefs" (according to Rand.) Many of them seem to be doing very well for themselves. |
