Dear oh dear, young people of today ... where to even start with this one. If you look around Youtube you will find Free are much revered and I think very few people would agree their albums sounded "crap". As to the "not too famous" Island, ask anyone who listened to music at the time and who knows what they are talking about and they will put you straight about the standing of the label, its Basing Street Studios and its engineers.

The technology had nothing to do with it, it was the engineers skill that mattered.

They were only very young (19) when Rogers and Fraser wrote 'Alright Now' younger then the Beatles were when they had their first big hit. This recording is from the IOW in 1970 to compare with todays technology would be the same as comparing 1970 technology with 1932!

Haha, free were unlucky with sound engineers. Great band live but terrible quality records that make them sound crap, probably why they arent as revered as they should be. They was on Island Records which wernt to famous so they sound engineers were crap.
