no he never passed out on stage..that was just in the movie to add to the drama effect. He smashed the footlights at the Grand Ole Opry with the Mic stand and the Grand Ole Opry said they coulnt use him anymore. When he was nearing his death his vision became so bad that he was pretty close to blind
