Focusing on her tone, which you find objectionable, is missing the point. She, along with Louis Armstrong, is the architect of phrasing, period. Any singer you listen to is standing on her shoulders, if their singing is earthy, sensual and valid. In music, there are three levels of listening: textural, structural and aesthetic. The third level is where great music resides and has its effect. A blind man touches a painting's surface. Can he value it fairly? Can he perceive the aesthetic result?

Its the rawness of her voice. Its not particular beautiful, strong, with octaves, or the bestetc. But its real and emotional. She seems to feel every word she sings and you cant help but at least respect it. Thats why most people say they love the WAY she sings. I dont really care for it either but I understand its appeal and specialness
