You may be interested to know that Baroque cello and viola da gamba bows and techniques were quite similar. Both involved the finger-controlled string tension you observed. In fact, the cello itself was once commonly bowed underhand!--the overhand method gradually becomming dominant due to its use with other bowed instruments and the disappearance of the viola da gamba.
