Google "Chris Simms" and "spleen" then come back and tell me this.The pads aren't to prevent bruises but to prevent fatalities: the last season played without pads 18 people died. Football has fewer tackling restrictions than rugby and blindside hits are far more common.

look up the greatest football hits of all time and notice how long the player on the receiving end of the hit is on the ground for. They all get up immediately, thus no matter how hard they hit, the amount of padding worn negates the force of the hit. the only time someone actually gets hurt is when they fall wrong and break something. Not from the actual hit
