This is an amazing cartoon. The Fleischers were the masters of animated surrealism in the early 30s.

By what? Not "The Ghost of Steven Foster". This was made in 1930! The Flieschers were the ones who invented this dark style.

Well that may be true, but alcohol consumption went up during the Prohibition, so they likely weren't trying to compensate with weed for a previous fondness for the sauce.
