The US deLuxe versions are active basses with active EQ (the newer ones). It gives you more tone variations. But i agree a standard US bass is very nice.I have a 2004 J-bass with S-1 and a P-bass from 2001. I also have a few MIJ bases some of them are JV serial from early 80'sThe quality of US bases from 70's and 80's did vary a lot. Even admited by Fender. And this helped establish MIJ fender in the 80's.

These days for people who care about having a broad range of tone, yes.I play Prog-Metal and I'd prefere a Jazz over a Precision.I don't have one though cause, y'know, other than the naff hit-or-miss "Jazz 24" they have too little frets for me.If you cannot choose between them, have both.A P-J Combo is fine...I prefere it that way.

Jazz basses are also used ALOT for Jrock

To put it basic, P-bass pickups are two split pickups. One covers the E and A string and the other covers the D and G string.Google search "Precision Pickup" for images. These give a natural, woody tone, useful for rock etc.Jazz pickups are the straight ones that cover all strings and are not split.Google search "Jazz Pickup" for image. These can be paired or found near the bridge and give a brighter sound, easpecially @ the bridge. These are often used for Jazz, Funk etc.

Moiez101, J basses are way better for funk. All the great funk bassist use them. I've even seen Les Claypool using one before.

Hey, i'm new to this stuff, can you please explain the difference between J and P pickup bass? I think that Jass bass has a warmer, softer and wider range of sound and P has a more twangy, harder, purcussion-style sound. Am i right? which one is better for slapping and playing Funk?

Really?I played the delux jazz and precision and I was underhwlemed with both. The standard american (or even mexican) is a really good bass, I can't realy see any need to buy the delux.
