A couple of people mention the lyrics, which are by the great 20th C. Irish poet, W.B. Yeats. Judy Collins recorded it before Donovan on her second album, I think to a different melody, and may have called it "Golden Apples of the Sun," also the title of the album.

I discovered Donovan just the other day. Lol. I watched Futurama and heard the Atlantis song and was like "I need to find out who does this" and now I have heard abunch of his songs. He's goofy, but good. :3
