Um. There is a HUGE difference between smoking bans and racial discrimination. No one's saying smokers aren't allowed in restaurants, they're just not allowed to smoke in them. It's not the same debate at all.

I think the big blow to Goldwater was he vouched for business owners to have the right to decide for themselves on segregation. That's why the next campaign ad showed KKK vouching for Goldwater. Granted that was the wrong thing, but you look at all the smoking bans in restaurants and it's the same debate.

This commercial didn't win the election for Johnson. It only ran twice before it was pulled due to the controversy behind it. And when it ran, Johnson was already whupping Goldwater in the polls. Johnson won in no small part because Goldwater was a crackpot. He never even needed to make this crazy ad.

Johnson's wife Ladybird, dedicated her life toward the preservation of the country's flora. Ironic, that her husband became president with an ad that showed a little girl getting nuclear bombed after picking/destroying flowers...
