It could also be a reference to his character in Naked Civil Servant, but I think it's a closer reference (note the similar makeup) to his role as The Countess in Van Sant's "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues."

Awesome actor, John Hurt that is. Just seems to absorb any role he does, he's one of the best actors the UK has ever produced. Top 5 easily. Oh, and the song's quite good as well. Not quite as good as Electricity, We are the Pigs or Filmstar imo, maybe just a diferent style though.
