A new rabies vaccine was developed in the mid '70's and became the accepted treatment for rabies in the mid eighties. This vaccine can be administered sub dermal in the arm, as opposed to the old, painful stomach shots that Ozzy Osbourne liked to describe after the bat biting incident.

When I worked in the south pacific islands I saw many rabies cases and there are actually two completely different reactions to the disease; yes there is the rage filled Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days cases where the disease makes the afflicted hellbent on infecting another, because the disease KNOWS it kills it's host it becomes desperate to find a new host, but there are also victims where the messages from the brain become so rabies scrambled the muscles no longer work and they just lie there.

If you get bitten, even if it didn't look rabid it pays to get checked out. Better the shots to the stomach than going crazy...
