I think we had so much fun with the Puritani contest, we should try out a differnt opera. This time I choose Verdi's La Traviata, and the aria is the final cabaletta in act I, Sempre Libera. I started each one right at the introduction to the cabaletta segment. I am sure I will hear about it from the masses! But once again since we are working with video material not every soprano can be included, some sopranos such as Sills and Gruberova have videos released on commercial dvd, therefore, I am not including them. I am going to follow tradition here and use a score of 1-5 for two catagories singing/characterization. Here are the singers I have included and the dates of the performances:June Anderson - 2000Joan Sutherland - 1975Daniela Dessi - 1994Ileana Cotrubas - 1981Stefania Bondadelli - 2004Cecilia Gasdia - 1986Elena Mosuc - 2001Darina Takova - 2001Renata Scotto - 1973Anna Netrebko - 2003Mary Dunleavy - 2001Nelly Miricioiu - 1993Mariella Devia - 1999Dimitra Theodossiou - 2000

You don't really notice her acting as much in the '04 modern production because the set is so distracting. I like that one more.

I like the singing too, but the acting seems wrong somehow. She isn't acting happy. She isn't throwing caution to the wind, she's just tense and looks kind of angry and annoyed.

very nice. absolutely no difficulty with her notes, but as the previous poster said, there is something very heavy and labored about her coloratura at some bits. at others, though, she is sublime. great acting!

Basically, an excellent voice. But very labored coloratura, and the same downer personality that she brings to every role.

Now by the sounds of it I am the only amateur here, because I thought she was lovely. Slightly heavy in some places but her mannerisms and intensity made me believe for a moment that she is Violetta.
