UMCP FCA PCN 2006 -- Pandanggo sa Ilaw-Oasiwas
University of Maryland, College ParkFilipino Cultural AssociationHAPUNAN28th Annual Philippine Culture NightApril 1, 2006This 'dance with lights' comes from the island or Mindoro. The female dancers gracefully and skillfully balance three tinghoy, oil lamps, on their heads and backs of their hands. Oasiwas, means 'swinging' and comes from Lingayan, Pangasinan. After a good catch, fishermen and villagers celebrate by swinging and circling lighted lamps wrapped in fishnet.Patricia BautistaJoanna DelfinSteve EncomiendaKim FriasDaryl JacobDiane JacobKristina MadulaLawrence MagaliAngelica ReyesAJ RopisanRussel SantosMatt SinkiatJonathan SterlinLani YapTaught by Don VerdeInspired by the Bayanihan Philippine Dance CompanyNote: It's unfortunate that the only people who post comments are Filipinos who want to feel superior by pointing out flaws or posting nasty comments. The performers are Filipino American students with limited knowledge of the Philippines, but a lot of pride in learning about their heritage. They've dedicated weeks learning about the cultures of the Philippines and sharing it with their community, despite limitations in budget, costumes, and resources. Comments encouraging them to learn are welcome, but if you cannot find any merit in their efforts, please keep your comments to yourself.
