As someone pointed out, it maybe because its has been sung in Hindustani style. Nowadays a lot of Carnatic musicians sing Hindustani songs with mridangam-it's good to see cross over and people taking an interest in each other's music! Of course that doesn't mean the original style should be forgotten...

it has been sung in Hindustani Style, So they might have used tabla instead od mridangam
