All 3 are correct. There are references of the word "hooker" being used before the civil war. It was use to refer to women who "hung around the hook", referring to Corlear's Hook. However the extra credit hits as to why so many people want to believe that it originated during the civil war. His name makes an good aptronym for the choices he and the men under his command made in life. In truth it's a myth believed so strongly it became a part of history.
