In a U235 (and/or Pu-239) fission system, one or both of those metals are compressed by high explosives (to about 1/10 of their volume) and around the time of max compression a few neutrons are injected to start the fission reaction. An H-bomb uses a fission bomb to accomplish basically the same sequence in fusion fuel- first compression, and then heating rather than neutrons to start the reaction. Fission/fusion/fission systems are used also- the first two set off a final, big fission reaction.
