You're right-I meant Devotion. It also featured the great Larry Young...

Actually, Buddy Miles didn't play on the album "Extrapolation," he played on "Devotion." Which I believe was recorded in Electric Lady studios, if I'm not mistaken.

My uncle turned my on to the MO. I think they sound like speed metal + Jazz fusion + prgessive rock = M.O. I love J.M's playing, if you want to hear him play in a real understated way check out Jack Bruce's disc titled "Things We Like" it has John on guitar, Jack on Double Bass, Jon Hiesman on drums, and Dick H-Smith on Sax. Great stuff from '68 around the same time John M was about to record with Miles in America.

Flashy guitar solos that go on for a while get on my nerves, but I wanted that one to go on longer.

Rick Laird isn't as flashy as alot of other bass players from his era but that made him even more invaluable to the band because he was the anchor, life buoy and lighthouse of the band when they would get themselves into trouble with their wild solos and couldn't find their way home. All they had to do was listen to his grooves to get back in form. It takes a special kind of musician to check his ego and act as glue to art that can get pretty chaotic Rick Laird does NOT suck!!

Why would it scare Hendrix? John was a big fan of Jimi and Buddy Miles played guitar on John's 1970 album "Extrapolations". No one knew that Buddy was a good guitarist and though John played fast, he never had the depth of Jimi's sonic vision. Listen to "Machine Gun" on the Band of Gypsys album. By the way, I saw John live with this band-it was a great concert! I also used to see Jerry Goodman in his band "The Flock". Look for them with the tune "Store Bought, Store Thought" on youtube...

rick laird had a pulsating bass going at the time, emphasise time, try going back to that time when it was all about creating new sounds,it charged music into the future at fast pace, its easy to critic this music 30 years on, but try to imagine yourself back in them days, jesus christ, what john was playing must habe scared the shit out of the likes of hendrix, and the better musicians around today know that john was right in taking that direction in music

Rick Laird sucks? Ya, right! John McLaughlin finds some of the best bass players from under rocks that very few people no about. Being a bass player, I cannot even imagine trying to play with John or Billy or Hammer............You don't play with John McLaughlin cause you suck. |
