the Purple one is her morality core, it stops her from being "evil" - the people that used to be there installed it as she killed them.you wont hear it speak but you notice how it effects how GLaDOS acts through out the tests, where she starts or wants to say something evil the Core will stop her and theres when she "glitches" while talking. Example, where she says "you will be....missed" she really saying "you will be killed" but the core is stopping her from saying so directly.
