She never felt she looked beautiful until "Meet Me In St. Louis." She looks glorious here. June Allyson said the camera loved Judy, that she just didn't have a bad angle and yet she was not a classic beauty. She and Hepburn were friends--Hepburn told her off many times, including climbing into Garland's house once through an open bathroom window. Doris Day in her biography speaks proudly of suffering a nervous breakdown concurrent with Judy having one when both were at Warner. Real people!

I sometimes think that beauty is too narrowly defined. Was she your cookie cutter brand blond bombshell of the day? No, but there was something about her that drew you in and transcended that. It was more than her voice which was the best, it was something about her look and her talent. She was truly great. Too bad she was so taken advantage of by the movie moguls of the day. She is irreplaceable.

she really was incredible. of course... I think she was right that she was not a natural beauty... but so few women are... When I think of natural beauty... I think of Linsey Wagner (young), Olivia Newton John... but she was certainly not ugly... I mean, the women of her day were monstly make-up, clothes and created beauty. What makes a persom beautiful is their soul... and no one gave more of that, thank Judy Garland. She was a GEM.

Well, the skirt bit, in part, is because it is a masterfully-made costume... a well fit dress is always much easier to manage...

yeah i think that too. but then, i dont know ONE girl who doesnt have a problem with the way she looks, including myself, so i guess that just makes judy normal :)(except she wasnt, she was extraordinary!)

It didn't strike me until now how much this owes to the "Girl of the Moment" number from LADY IN THE DARK (1941 play, 1944 move) -- and Garland even mentions the star of the film version, Ginger Rogers.
