I believe this object to be an alien probe which is monitoring the Phoenix spacecraft. It's transmitting data back to an e.t. mothership hidden on Phoebos which has been stationed there since it's arrival from Andromeda. Once it has ascertained human strengths and weaknesses they will launch an armada to complete phase 3 of the clandestine Operation:Assrape.
