I heard to use (and now use) peat moss, with sand and gardening lime, along with dried vine/grape vine leaves for bedding.Only problem is, if you let the dry leaves rehydrate and have lack of ventilation, they will grow green (and white) mold. This is what I just noticed today. Never had an issue with paper molding (Use non-color newspaper, and rinse well), but then again, I had a black trash bag sealed over the leaves and never did that with my other worm bins.I love vermicomposting :)

impalapez If you got a starbucks nearby, or any local coffee shop should be able to give you there leftover grounds... ---------I have been using left over fruit and pasta in small amounts and misting. Why is coffee important for them? I notice many use grounds to feed the worms.

The worms will eat the shredded paper. Worms love coffee grounds because they fit right in to their mouth and bellies very nicely. Colombian coffee Juan Valdez please (just kidding). Do not have to mist frequently as long as the inside is very humid. If you're only raising worms for fishing don't waste the castings. The worm humus, castings or poop is the best fertilizer in the world. You can mix it with soil for your grandmother's plant pots.

I am new to worms so these questions might be silly. I noticed you dont use regular soil? You use shredded paper. I dont drink coffee but will use that if you think its good to use. I was planning on using food scraps like Veg,Fruit. Do you mist the top frequently? Do you clean the whole thing out every few months by removing the worms and replacing the bedding? My plan is a bin/set up like yours to raise fishing worms for my grandfather. Thank you

i was replying to crock's question about an easy way to get them. i never said it was about the money....my worm farm is to provide rich soil for house plants! and because i enjoy watching the progress they make.

I was told that on some freecycle boards or composting forums some people in your area might be willing to share. Try that.

I touched them just to make them move so that you can see them. |
