I don't like to get involved in these arguments anymore, but you will find the same idea of a string, ring, or no bridle to communicate with a horse. As for this particular horse's play drive, I can honestly witness to the fact that not all horses look like bunnies when they are playing (It is really up to you where the line, which is fine, is drawn b/t a good and bad countenance).

Wow!Even if you don't agree with the training method the results are impressive.

There are no reins on this horse in this video, ever. What is not shown is that at 3:28 when the video has been clipped, Mikey has taken the string off of his carrot stick and tied it around Red Sun's neck (you can just see him doing this as the video cuts over). I realize it is poor quality, but at 3:35 you can see Mickey reach up and use the string as a subtle cue to lay the horse down. The string is black (this means something in the world of Parelli) so it is hard to see, so look closely.

Henryhorn1, you are very astute, but a little off track. Horses take care to not displease the alpha BY mirroring what the leader is doing. This becomes quite obvious in watching a mare / foal relationship. The fact that this horse is mirroring Mikey shows that Mikey HAS established a leadership postition by using, as Pat Parelli would say, Love Language and Leadership as opposed to fear intimidation and mechanics. In other words, the natural way.

Sorry I disagree. in a herd hierarchy the horses take great care not to displease the leader, and this appears the case in the vid.He is mirroring the leader's behaviour not doing things he is asked to do because he is trained to do them. There is a vast difference in the two.

If you watch the clip carefully there appears a rein sized piece between the rider's hands for a fleeting moment, not a piece of string. I just can't see why it's been removed from the rest of the clip.
