This clip shows Shintaro the Samuraiwalking along a beach, where he meets up with Tombei the Mist (an Iga Ninja), and Shuzaku (the boy). The background song is from the original theme tune "Edo no onmitsu wataridori".Edo was the original name for Tokyo. "Onmitsu" is translated into English as 'spy', and "wataridori" as 'wandering' -hence, a 'wandering spy from Edo'(referring to Shintaro). In Japan, the program was called "Onmitsu Kenshi" - (spy swordsman), or, more aptly, a skilled Samurai working 'undercover' for the Shogun, using the bogus name of "Shintaro Akikusa".The series was produced between 1962 and 1965, and is set in the early Edo Period, also known as the Tokugawa Period. The clip shown here was first broadcast in Japan in 1964, and in Australia in 1965.The Samurai called himself "Shintaro Akikusa", but he was related to the Shogun, and his real family name was Matsudaira (part of the Tokugawa regime). The role of Shintaro was played by Koichi Ose, and the series was incredibly popular in Australia in the mid 1960's.

Actually, he was the elder half-brother of the much younger Shogun.Shintaro's real name was Matsudaira Nobuchiyo, but he posed as Shintaro Akikusa, a masterless Ronin (Samurai ).The series was set in the Tokugawa Period, also known as the Edo Period. (Edo was later renamed "Tokyo", meaning 'Eastern Capital '.

Shintaro was the brother of the Shogun (Matsudaira ), and was therefore an educated man as well as being a skilled swordsman. He used the name "Shintaro Akikusa " to hide his true identity (he was also a Matsudaira ).Essentially, he was working 'undercover' to seek out the Shogun's enemies, who included secret clans of Ninjas as well as individual trouble makers.
