And before you jump on his suicide as a reason to want to "cure" autism it was because of the way other people treated him not because of him. If people had treated him appropriately then it would not have happened. Videos like this do not help us teach people how to treat our kids correctly. It is for him and the others that I speak out against anything that will lead to more discrimination against our kids.

I have raised children to adulthood without the benefit of the diagnosis and all the "help" that comes with it. The only regret I have is not knowing with the older ones because one of them completed suicide because of his Aspergers. If we had known before Joshua we might have been able to save his brother. However, better late than never with the diagnosis.

I am the mom of 5 autistic kids and the grandma of 3 autistic kids. I am Autistic and so is my husband. We like who we are and who our kids are. I would not trade who I am for even one second of being NT. These moms portray Autism in a negative light and that makes it hard for my kids. I have to speak out against that. I am sorry that you don't like who you are but that does not mean I have to dislike who I am. i understand living with Autism and I don't have a problem with it.

I am a man with high-functioning Aspergers Syndrome. My son is high-functioning autistic. Frankly, for all my intellectual gifts (and I have more than a few), I would gladly trade them if my Aspergers (and my son's autism) was part of the package.I don't think that you appreciate what these parents go through, especially given the effort that they go through to prepare their children for adult independent life.

We use sign language. That is not "therapy" that is education. We do not teach our children in "unnatural environments" All the progress we have made with our children has been in the context of doing what families do naturally every day and in sending our kids to school like other kids. They learned to eat at a table and to ask for more food at the dinner table not in a clinical or "forced" home setting. Now dinner could take as long as four hours in the beginning but not any more.

God doesn't require me to come to him as an NT he asks only that I come to him "Just as I am" so what gives men on this earth the right to require me to be something that God himself does not require of me? How dare they seek to eliminate me and my children because we are different from them? You take offense that I claim my place and the place of every Autistic as a Child of God? How dare you or any other person? We are his children and we are not broken and he loves us just the way we are.

I find it offensive that this entire group (Autism Speaks) wants to "cure and eliminate anything along the Autism Spectrum" and as a Child of God who he loves I take issue with that.

But they teach them sign language and ways to better function in society. That is all I am looking for my daughter.

Wow! I will continue to work with my daughter and celebrate each and every milestone she acheives and only wish the best for EACH and EVERY person and family dealing with this! No matter how they have chosen to do so.

We never spent the money on weighted anything with our kids either. The dark (no unnatural lighting) absolute quiet room allowed them to "download" all the sensory input into their brains. The link between the brain and the sensory nervous system moves more slowly in Autistics than in NTs. The "down time" scenario allows the brain time to process what they have experienced. This reduces the overload and stops the screaming and crying. It is a simple concept. |
