Some of the footage in this is pre collapse and is hard to find. It gives you an idea why it was named Galloping Gertie since Transverse waves were visible along the span

You know it is hard to bealive someone who cat spells the word because- COZ. It was wind.
nishnish12 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
this happened coz the frequency of the driving force came dangerously close to the natural frequency of the bridge, thus causing a very large rise in amplitude of the "oscillation". And then we all know what happened :(

no... is harmonic ressonance. not just pressure.

well if time was limited i woulda done the same thing. Though i like dogs, i would save my life before the dogs. Sure both are said if either dies. But it's better fro the man to live.

i live in seattle and have gone over the new tacoma narrows bridge, i looked at the struts of the original bridge, the only bit that was left, and thought wow, wind did all that
lunaticaution (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
poor thing :(
wingman901 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
with the way the beams were placed under the surface of the bridge, the wind split and created uneven pressures on the bridge creating a vortex. i did a project on this in high school. lol rediculous

I can't believe people are driving on this after the shaking started.
