the tricky thing about anything 'indian' is that u label something 'something', only to find out 100 variants of the same. so is the case with this recipe.. this looks new to me.. i must have tasted over 20-30 variations of 'maharashtrian' dal (or varan) living in maharashtra for about 25 yrs... this is just one of them!!! PS: this comment is just for information and to give my 'unwanted' opinion. Not at all to criticise anything.

this isnt Varan... this is called Amti or sometimes ambat varan... plain varan only has dal,haldi and asafoetida

According to Wikipedia - In India and Pakistan, cumin is known as jeera or jira or sometimes zira; in Iran and Central Asia, cumin is known as zira.
