there is no disconnect between the mind and body , no break - all nerves. So the body is just an extension of the brain.

But again it seems like the for-profit concept is the problem (and not caring about the environment, but that's inherent), not civilisation, or agriculture itself. But yea, transportation on large scales would ravage the Earth.

Yea, that's what Pollan was saying in 'Omnivore's Dilemma'. Or he was quoting an organic farmer opposed to the current organic industry. Shipping the food makes things much worse for the Earth with all the energy used for transportation and agribusiness techniques not unlike rape, and makes things much harder on farmers and workers who either have too much or too little work, and it costs more.

I think that sustainable form is small scale communal farming, or at least a system where all food is grown locally

Well what's huge? That statement seems arbitrary or in the eye of the beholder. Show me evidence that she can't sustain it. Obviously right now she can't, but like you said, there can be a mutually beneficial relationship with our planet while maintaining a form of agriculture.

Sorry, I meant to say it actually improves the Earth, if done correctly.

the assumption of ownership comes in when humans start massively altering the landscape to farm on a huge scale in order to feed huge cities and suburban areas. that type of farming is more like stealing from nature than living in harmony with her. she can't sustain it.

Show me some evidence that agriculture has harmed nature. Not agribusiness, agriculture. I am pretty much in agreement with you otherwise.
jtr3030 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I am totally on board with you there.

Why isn't the ingestion of food an assumption of ownership? So should we not grow plants ever? If we see a seed on the table, should we freak out and hide behind the couch? I don't want to assume I own that seed because if I touch it, it might grow somewhere unnatural and thus I have harmed nature. |
