Tai chi is nessecry for anybody who wants to learn a martial arts. Tai chi help regulate bodys internal chi and let it evenly flow into differents part of the body. I do tai chi every morning to help with my martial arts. I recomend anybody who wants to learn martial art to learn how to do tai chi.

My advice would not be to use dvd's or such. You do need a teacher, especially when you start practising.
