best version? i understand its your opinion, but not one i share. For my money, no version ever bets the original. I mean he wrote and recorded this song for his first album, he didn't know if this was his first or his last. And you can feel it in the song, he went for broke. i feel the same way about versions of any song from the first album

Find it on the John Prine Anthology Great Days. He may have seen the stone angel atop the old Montgomery Ward building in Chicago before he wrote this .
