The movie was racist. In the black exploitation movies, the white guys were always mafia or something, to give cover to the beating up of white guys. Shaft ends up with the white girl, and beats the crap out of the white guys. Like the hayes song, the movie was just PR for black guys, and of a VERY lowbrow nature.

Mr. Hayes, we'll always have the great memories of you, and of your great work. Your masterpiece song, "Shaft," literally rose above an entire genre of movies. Gordon Parks could not have asked for a better, more beautiful composition, for his movie. May you rest in peace.
