QUOTE: "That is not a reference to being burned at the stake."That may be your interpretation. The Christians of prior centuries did not share it. From an outside perspective, it seems they have a better ground to stand on theologically. If you believe God will torture and burn heretics, why should it be evil for you to do so? And if doing so discourages others and thereby saves their souls, isn't that a good thing?Ironically, the zeal to fight Hell creates Hell on Earth.

And I thought you understood the scriptures so well. NOT. That is not a reference to being burned at the stake. As you well know, he is speaking of the everlasting fire in the lake of fire.

QUOTE: "jesus must die"To paraphrase Marnes:As I was going up the stairI met Jesus, who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. I wish to God, he'd go away.

There are other stories of a more vindictive Jesus (Matt 11:21-24). Jesus also seems to call for the burning of heretics at the stake in John 15:6.

Mr John L. Armstrong:Jesus never taught his disciples to kill those that didn't believe in him. He actually spoke against it when James and John wanted to call fired down from heaven on unbelieving Jews. Furthermore, he simple told them that they were to shake the dust off of their feet against any city that rejected their message of the messiah. Lastly, Jesus himself never forced his teaching on people. They heard him willingly. Also, when they told him to leave, he left.

The British defeated the Spanish Armada but didn't go on to convert all of Ireland. They didn't want to, presumably because they thought that the Irish were a lesser race, i don't know. However, the Spanish weren't necessarily defending Ireland. They wanted to convert Europe to Catholicism too. But more likely is that they wanted to quash their rivals for the domination of the New World.

The extremists on both sides of Northern Ireland's troubles used many reasons to justify their struggle and religion was most definitely one of the main 'battle cries'. People have been manipulating religion to exert political and military influence since day one. |
