One of the few Grand National winners I backed ! A great ride by John Burke.

Mmm. Often wondered what Brian Fletcher was thinking whilst riding "eyecatcher". Mixed feelings perhaps?

Yes. Brian Fletcher had been replaced as Red Rum's jockey that year. Later he was to say that if Tommy Stack had kicked on after Becher's the second time, Red Rum would not have been caught. The following year, Stack did exactly that and lo and behold, Rummy won again. Thanks for putting on this recording. It was my first attendence at the National and I have never seen the race recording until now.

I seem to remember Tommy Stack getting a lot of criticism for waiting for something to happen and leaving the finish to too much of a sprint, rather than going for home early on, on what was, by then, one of the older horse.

Grey Sombrero was put down after breaking a shoulder as the field run off to the water jump you can see him get to his feet at the back of frame and his poor forleg hanging loosly even worse for me than that is as Red Rum and Crisp battle out their epic finnish depending on the camera angle as the approach the line you can see the knacker van pulling up by poor Grey Sombrero on the inner track.

Thanks, It's a shame about that - in the video footage the horse gets to its feet after the fall, although certainly appears to be in discomfort. It was also a shame about the fatal accident suffered by McKelvey in yesterday's race. He was 2nd in last year's national of course.

Grey Sombrero was put down after his fall at The Chair, I think...

What happened to Grey Sombrero, by the way? I know he fell at The Chair in the 1973 race.
