What it needs is a grand piano in a historically accurate temperament. Equal temperament is kind of an anachronism here... I would love to hear this in a more appropriate tuning.

The older I get the more problems I have listening to pre-romantic music on a grand piano. A harpsichord is what this piece is begging for.

Glen Gould was one asked who he thought was the greatest keyboard of all and without hesitating answered, "Orlando Gibbons."

I used to think Bach was the best (for me) until I heard Gibbons. Out of the Deep is wonderful.

Gould plays early music with such a sensitivity to its simplicity and beauty -- you can really tell how much he loved this under-appreciated musical period. |
