Their initial knowledge might have been caused by V'ger in another, alternate timeline, though...that I know nothing about.Also, I would like to point out that the TNG Borg were pussies. The only series to even come close to realizing the true potential of the Borg was Voyager. When watching TNG recently, I was severely miffed at how easily the crew got Locutus back, and the whole thing with Data going "Hey, I can override the Borg collective itself and plant a supervirus in their midst..."

How the Borg know about Earth is a bit of a time paradox. In "First Contact", one of their probes are shot down by the Enterprise D, after having travelled back from the 24th century to the time of the first warp flight. The survivors of this crash are dug out of the ice in Star Trek Enterprise, and though ultimately thwarted in flying a procured ship into Borg space after coming back to life, they send off a signal into the Delta Quadrant that will arrive in the 24th century. But then again, Guinan stated that the Borg's bio-mechanical technology had been developing over a period of "thousands of centuries".Personally, I think the Borg does not originate anywhere near our galaxy. And contrary to "Star Trek - Legacy" I don't think it has anything to do with V'ger. Doesn't match the time tables if Guinan is right, at any rate.

I do believe the Borg got started after that incident during the first Star Trek movie. Veger I do believe its was.
