there are descent tuners for less than that. they might not be the style you like, but they are incredibly high quality. hipshot tuners are $12.50 a piece and $13.50 for locking tuners. i think i want to attempt making one. i have all the tools in my garage (jointer planer, radial arm saw, and table saw) i can almost solder, and i can find piezo pickups and lots of random guitar parts. is it incredibly hard. could you give me some pointer?

i don't make 4 stringers, the necks i use are too thin. You must use heavy guage guitar strings. I use the 6th, 5th and 4th. I'd have to charge $300+ for a 4 stringers, the tuning machines alone are about $100 for a quality set :) I'd also have to buy some heavy duty wood working tools and saws which i don't have the money or room for :)
