Just one more thing (since you got me going): just as Poe might be the preferred reading for Goths, Hoffmann too had his influence on R%R: his famous short story The Sandman inspired the Metallica song...besides Hoffmann was a musician himself, and one of his creations is Johann Kreisler, a neurotic musician in late 1700 Germany who wears only black and plays guitar and he's almost a Goth Rock&Roller "ante-litteram"...check his books The Devil's Elixirs, The Life & Opinions of TomCat Murr, etc..

Actually, I thought of a good example to illustrate what I was saying...many of the people watching this might have heard of Jane Austen, the famous English novelist who wrote Sense And Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, etc.. she wrote a Gothic novel, Northanger Abbey, and to make it real Gothic, sure enough she set the story (girl seeks boy, like all her works) in a Gothic cathedral...she too is before Poe, although Poe made the Gothic style his own & he's rightly known as a master of the genre

birth of Gothic art (which precedes Gothic literature) & had the connotations I mentioned. It does not take a scholar to see that Poe was inspired by writers like Hoffman, and that these are chronologically before Poe. I'm not going to add anything else since I'm on YouTube for pleasure, while I deal with Gothic art and literature every day for work, since I have a Ph.D. on the subject and give lectures on this subject at a London university ... bye

Wrong? Is there no Gothic architecture? Gothic literature starts in Germany, with early Romanticism (Hoffman, Jean Paul) and in England (Ann Radcliffe). Poe was into German Romanticism and Idealist philosophy (Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel) which became Transcendentalism in the US (Emerson, Thoreau). In fact publishers who rejected Poe's early works complained that they were "too German", since Gothic was predominantly a German Style. Read John Ruskin's essays about the (continues)

Wrong... The music style Goth comes from the literature, like Edgar Alan Poe, and has nothing 2 do with the architecture

Goth comes from Gothic, which is a style that appeared at the end of the Middle Ages. Gothic architecture examples are Notre Dame in Paris or Milan's Cathedral (Duomo). Gothic architecture was elongated, aspiring to a higher plane spiritually, it was uneven and with often a scary quality. Gothic literature also existed, dealing with the stuff today familiar thru Horror. It was a Northern European style, and it's a stylistic term used also in music, poetry, etc..Goth is Gothic-like Rock&Roll
