Yo-yo ma is an unbelievable cellist. Why is he the only cellist around today with a true international career?

Rostropovitch was always my absolute hero.I heard him give incredible concerts. No one was like him. He was so unique.

I agree about Casals. I think because of his interpretations, people who have heard his recordings has obtained some of his traits of playing( which isn't that great). However, I respect him for finding the Bach Cello Suites. Almost no one can beat Rostropovich though, maybe except for Fournier if he had lived longer.

There has never been anyone like Rostropovitch during his better playing years: Amazing energy, incredible sound, passion, brilliant technique, colosal repertoire, photographic memory, incredible musical effects like high up feathery vibrato in pp parts and incredible sound higher up with singing tone.

After his terrible time in Russia when they severely punished him, he was not the same cellist at all when he settled in Washington. He still did some magnificent recording and performances;but the strain took it's toll. The other cellists mentioned are and were magnificent of course.

I heard Rostropovitch during his truly best playing years. He was absolutely phenominal. He was a true genius at the cello at that time. Unfortunately he went on performing cello too long. ( because of his tough way of life his playing aged early).

Fournier Was close but Not as Good. ( I think ) Webber was really Creative as a cellist, But I dont think He could of taken on Slava.
