After reading Richter's memoirs+much written about him,i find dificult to take seriosly many of his statements,he was so contradictory. That's not a criticism of his artitsic qualities,he was a great individualist! But he memory-lapsed EVEN WITH the notes before him in London, probably looked up at the wrong bit of the page!Generally, for soloists in Romantic repertoire,i find it better, more freely expressed with no score in front, well memorose.

It had nothing to do with a memory "crash". He stated in the documentary that some strange thing happened with his mind that altered his sense of pitch. He said he used to have perfect pitch, but it changed to be a half tone too high. Because of this, everything he played sounded wrong to him, which made him decide to rely on the score.

He had phenomenal memory but complexed after disastrous lapse(in 1970's?).For me,his best was done before dependence on scores, and he systematically used Yamahaha later on which ruined his tone & touch...and YET,he still convinces musically! This incomplete clip is better than when i heard him live, pity not to have the whole piece,sorry..SONG!

P.S. Adding to that absolutely exceptional (broad) repertoire: scores are only a + in his case. Not only emotional power or amazing, unbelievable technical skills. |
