actually it's about a woman fagen met in college, she was the wife of one of his professor's and he fell for her and she was intrigued but declined, that's the truth.

One of my favourite Steely songs ever...The bridge from 2:54 to 3:12 is so deep and surprisingly melodic after all the aharmonic and amelodic stuff present in the rest of the song. Not sure if i've explained that correctly but....hope you know what I mean! :P

such a ridiculously perfect tune, its not fair

Hmmm...maybe. But with "Rikki" clearly spelled in the feminine form I suspect you're on the wrong track. But whatever.

I disagree with your analysis. I think the name "Rikki" is intentionally gender ambiguous. I think it's really about a gay dude trying to get another dude who's unsure about his own sexual orientation to stay in touch after a sexual encounter. "You tell yourself you're not my kind, but you don't even know your mind (and you could have a change of heart)"
levanyzzuf (May 25, 2008 at 7:56 pm)
I don't think "Rikki" is all that ambiguous - "number" is slang for "joint" and the tune is about a couple of guys getting a teen into weed. That's why she needs to send it off in a letter to herself. I think...Or you could just watch Melegorm's video. His interpretations are always the best.

Some other great Steely Dan lyrical themes: "Caves of Alta Mira" about prehistoric cave paintings, and "The Royal Scam" - Problems that Puerto Rican immigrants face in New York. What about the ambiguously gay references in songs like, "I Got the News", "Gaucho" and "Rikki Don't Lose that Number"? Am I the only one who sees this?
