Matthew 16:18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Yeah. The point is, we kept the name by which fathers of the Church referred to the Church. Because it's the same. We, unlike others have not come to existence by any man later, but by Jesus in ~ 32 AD.

"Catholic...means universal"with lower case:) "catholic" (Not the denomination known as Catholicism)
paxcoder (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
And it isn't. But no denominationalism is above what He founded. Catholic, as said, means universal. It's one faith in Christ, and it isn't up for a debate.

Please read my comment again. I said "coming to faith in Christ - lest I be misunderstood again it means knowing him, not with the head, but the heart. This isn't about Hinduism, Islam or any other faith. There is one church and all who have come to faith in Christ are members of that "Called out assembly".No Christian should be elevating their church or denomination above Christ.

Hehe, funny how you didn't say believing in Christ. Hindus also claim to "believe". And you said faith, which was right. You need to find out which faith is that. Are we saved simply believing that He died for us? No, we need to accept Him, and live by His word. It matters which Church it is simply because God is not a god of confusion. He made one Church upon Peter to keep ans spread the true teaching, which is *not* subjective.Btw. I haven't talked about this in the vid. Still, good question.

Does Scripture teach we are saved when we join a certain denomination or does it teach that believers are added to Christ's church upon coming to faith in Christ?

"there could be no Christians"No, it's based on an reasonable assumption there were (not could be) no Christians that weren't orthodox (Catholic, Coptic, Orthodox, and very few others). If you think there were, and that they shared what Luther taught, you should show some evidence.Definitions of Church vary. I chose "Christians" as defined by the World today. Also, worth noting, we should both count out heretics, if not anything, on the basis of inconsistency (unlike orthodox churches). |
