keacat it's just a joke, you'll get over it. D:This thing is genius. I watched the movie and read the book this week, and only this movie gave me a glimmer of hope and life in the insanity that is 2001.

very nice yours thoughts. the monolith being as a last stage on a step chain is much in more in sense than others explanations. try to find out V. Grossman´s book, Life and Destiny. There´s a paper in it, with a quite plain argument, but very next to yours(Kubrick´s?): "there is only one thing that can make our lives truly meaningfull, and that is devoting our entire being to a greater good" I myself made an argument on this thinking of Vassily Grossman, if you interested, I´ll let you know.

this is my concise explanation of 2001: a space odyssy, because you said that nobody understands it at the end, but I have at least a semblance of understanding of this movie. I can't take all of the credit for the explanation as most of it came directlly from one of my proffesors, but some of it is my own original thoughts. here goes:

the way I understand it, it's all about man overcoming itself to reach a higher state of existance, in the begining, the obolisk signaled that primates were ready to become inteligent. thousands of years later, the oboisk on the moon signals that man is ready for it's next great step, when we are able to reach the moon, the next obolisk is activated and sends a signal to jupier. the deactivation of hal is significant in that it signals our overcoming ourselves

(or rather, the technology we created) thus preparing us for the next leval of human existance. then we see his life shortened into a montage, in which he grows old and is eventually on his death bed. this shows the shortness and meaninglessness of human life. there is only one thing that can make our lives truely meaningfull, and that is devoting our entire being to a greater good, working to elevate the world to an even higherlevel of existance. this is symbolized by the dave reaching for

the monolyth on his deathbed. even in the deaththrows of his life, he is pushing himself forward to greater hights. these greater hights, the higher state of existance I keep talking about, is symbolized by the monolyths, which are humanity's guid to elevation. as dave reaches for the monolyth, he reaches this higher state and becomes the Star Child, symbolizing man's transition from a lower plane to a higher one, a creature of the universe, rather than a creature of earth. the starchild is

not a physical manifestation, but rather a metaphor for our awarness of the universe. able to see the whole world and it's tiny place withing the solar system and the universe, humanity understands it's insignificant place in the universe and that it must strive for greater hights to achive any real meaning in its existance. thus man has overcome itself and moved from a lower plane of creatures ruling, manipulating, and understanding the earth, to creatures exploring and conquering the stars. |
