Remarkable silent film, 16mm Kodachrome movie film, YouTube of it's day. Probably the first color film ever made of a volcanic eruption. Mokuaweoweo Crater eruption filmed probably in late 1935 by Harold T. Stearns, a USGS Hydrologist-Volcanologist. The lava fountains are hundreds of feet high, the erupting fissure inside the crater is about two thousand feet long. The crater floor is at an elevation of 13,100' ASL. Stearns is flying in an open cockpit at an altitude of around 15,000' ASL. Note patches of snow on the rim of the crater! At 1 min, 50 secs into the video, a plane will enter the lower right corner of the frame. View the entire 66 minute SILENT FILM compilation that was hand edited by Stearns himself, but you have to use Windows Media Player, on the file menu select "open URL" and past in: mms://video.wr.usgs.gov/movies early_hawaiian_volcanoes.wmv This file contains all of this footage plus all of Stearn's other film covering about 15 years in Hawaii between the late 1920's and the early 1940's. Check out his kewl "text screens" LOL!

Kodachrome 16mm movie film was widely available in HI and mainland for Xmas 1934. The film was the YouTube of it's day...the cool way to communicate. Stearns knew this, got the film from Mainland be4 anyone, edited in shots of text titles and projected the hand edited original film to dozens of college audiences across the country. His records show Mokuaweoweo erupted in 1933, 1935 and 1940 with later eruptions too. He may have edited in a date off by a year, it was probably the 1935 eruption.

Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984 according to "Hawaii Volcanoes National Park" book publish in 2001. Book is by Sharlene and Ted Nelson. It talks about the park and both volcanoes(Mauna Loa and Kilauea).

This eruption is in Mokuaweoweo Crater at the summit of Mauna Loa, which is over 13,000 feet in altitude. There's no paved road to the summit even today, so viewing it from the air would've been the most reasonable way to do so. You'll notice there are white patches of snow visible in many shots.I believe this is the 1940 eruption, and as some other comments have pointed out, 16mm Kodachrome color film was widely available at that time.

Right Mauna Kea is the tallest. Mauna Loa is the most massive mountain on the planet -- and 2nd or 3rd in the entire solar system.

I was responding to 05aspeed who said Mauna Loa is the tallest mt in the world foot-to-summit. It isn't. Mauna Kea is. I'm not saying the video is Mauna Kea. It says it's Mauna Loa and I got no reason to doubt it. I have no idea. It could be Sugarloaf Mountain for all I know

Mauna kea has not erupted in over 4000 years.
