as a matter of fact leonidas and the spartans did very well at the battle of thermopylae. Leonidas did most of the fighting and he delayed the persian army until reinforcements arrived. The reason why leonidas fought so well in the real story and the movie because spartan boys were trained in the military from the age of 7 and their training in the army didnt stop until they were 30 and their service in the army itself didnt end until they turned 60. Then they could be part of the council
