No. The average is about 2G. The shuttle does a lifting reentry, not a ballistic reentry like soyuz. It just doesn't slow down as fast. The entire reentry is around 20 minutes, or almost 2 hours from the deorbit burn. This video is cut down a lot, to show highlights.

Mach varies according to altitude and atmospheric conditions. 761 is the approx speed of sound at sea level. It's a lot less waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up there.

Mach 1 is 750ish MPHSo when they say they're at Mach 25.1 and a minute later they say Mach 19. They've slowed down by Mach 6, or 4,500MPHNot bad breaks eh?
