So claims Wikipedia: "Caruso and Ruffo did pair up twice in the recording studio. Only one recording of these survive, the duet "Sì, pel ciel" from Otello. It is considered by many vocal connoisseurs to be the greatest single vocal record ever made. Among many other vocal feats in this recording, Ruffo, unlike any other Iago on records, manages an incredible, declamatory vocal style from beginning to end. Caruso rises to the challenge, and the result is unequalled by any other recorded tenor-baritone combination in recorded history."

For a gutsy, dramatic version check Antonio Paoli's recording. He was alive and already singing the Ottello when Verdi was still around. He was onefo Verdi'ds favorites. Paoli recorded the first ever full recording of an Opera in the early 20th century.

I read...and it is obvious, that these two were somewhat competitive. caruso once sang the prologue in pagliacci and ruffo, it is said used to sing vesti la guibba . Both large voices coming to a head in otello. it's unfortunate that verdi himself didn't hear this[or any of caruso's verdi repertoire] He would have been over 100 [or nearly] when caruso and ruffo were in their prime.. bravo

you are so right. had caruso been able to sing this role with ruffo there would have been NO debates on who the best duo of otello-iago. tamagno/maurel, zenatello/tibett, viany/valdegno, delmonaco/protti or domingo/milnes just to name a few duo's couldn't hang witht htese two boys! damn!

I disagree. I think that during the duet, they fuel eachother more with each bar. They have excellent chemistry as well. If Caruso had lived to sing Otello with Ruffo at the Met, they would have....well, other than bringing the house down and getting a booming standing ovation as long as the opera itself, I'm not exactly sure what would happen. Mass mayhem could ensue! Who knows?
