the warhead of the GBI, KEI and SM-3 all use kenetic energy warheads meaning that all damage is done with kenetic energy alone, much like bullets, high energy anti-tank sabot rounds, arrows, cannonballs, etc. The warheads of those particular weapons do not use explosives to achieve their destructive power.

GBI stands for Ground-Based Interceptor and they are currently deployed at Fort Greely, Alaska. The Kenetic energy warheads have thrusters for directional control as surface controls are useless in the vacuum of space i.e. fins, wings, rudders, ailerons, elevators. Each thruster makes minute compensations to ensure the kenetic energy warhead intercepts its target at the right moment in time and space.
